Yeah, I know, I’m really late, but I just couldn’t be bothered to watch the last episode after the lukewarm reviews I saw from others. Unfortunately, I’m going to pretty much echo their thoughts, so I’m going to keep it short for both our sanities.
Honestly, Kannagi should’ve stuck with what it was good at: perfectly timed comedy. Kannagi was really hilarious and had the comedy angle nailed down perfectly. Nagi and Jin’s stark contrast in personalities made the show great. Adding in the Art Club and Tsugumi and Zange made it fantastic. But then they went and ruined it with a last ditch attempt at being semi-serious. The pace was off and I honestly found it so boring that I watched the first 5 or 6 minutes of the show and then didn’t touch it for a week.
As a bonus, please enjoy this hilarious fansub typo(?):
I’m not sure if that was Ayako intentionally trying to make up for Kannagi’s lack of funny during the final episode or if it was really just a typo, but whatever the case, it gave me a good laugh and I really had to pause the episode to make sure I read it properly.

What was the typo? If you meant rape, it’s a real flower type, often called canola in the U.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapeseed
Different cultures, different names eg: coriander/cilantro; bell pepper/paprika

It’s a real flower… named rape blossom…? rofl, and here I thought it was a joke or a typo. Damn.

I remember something about those rape blossoms in the Pani Poni Dash OP, but the karaoke font was small and I thought it was rope. It makes equally little sense anyhow >_>
But getting back on topic, the serious aspects of Kannagi didn’t really work for me at all. It was a fun show, but nothing more, and the attempt to add more meaning to the story didn’t really work for me.

But yes…

Have to disagree about the tone of the show. I think there are going to be a couple more series of this, and in order to go the distance even comedy needs a storyline to hang the gags off. I thought they provided that pretty well, and did it in an interesting enough way that I was still entertained. Plus they were quick enough in lightening the tone again before the end to remind us that the comedy wasn’t forgotten.
Very good show IMHO.

Yeah, I agree the show was overall pretty good, but the way it ended just felt a little bit lame. I’m glad there was still a bit of comedy in it, like when the lady told Jin that she hung herself, his reaction was pretty hilarious. But I felt that the ending episode was just a bit sub-par. I don’t think it brings down the entire show, but to end on that note was just not what I was expecting out of a show that broke all the rules along the way. It almost seemed like a cop out.

Second that. I didn’t like the mood change in the last few episodes either.

I agree. I just watched it and it became all emo at the last few episodes. But nevertheless, I would really want a season 2 for this one as soon as the mangaka gets her health back and continue the manga ^^.

Honestly, the mood change wouldn’t have been all that bad if it had been done a bit better. And if the whole series wasn’t just a cutesy comedy show up until then. It was just way too random and didn’t feel rewarding at all. So, I guess Kannagi kinda dropped the ball twice is what I’m getting at, which made it feel worse.
