I have to admit, I wasn’t really going to get very excited about Kurokami. It seemed like your typical boy meets magical girl from the summaries I read. But the first episode left me totally blown away.
First and foremost, the action scenes were a blast. They were extremely well animated and anything goes. It seems my question of where all the exciting action shows have gone has been answered. Thank you, Kurokami, for filling that void. I’ve been waiting for a while for something this action packed.
Second, the story seems just as much, if not more anything goes than the action. Death and violence left and right, lolis getting taken out right in front of our eyes, sneak attacks on bishoujos trying to enjoy some ramen. I admit, the Sunrise tag has me concerned, but if they’re able to keep this up without falling back on their usual routine, things look good. I suppose the fact that they have a source material (manga I believe) will help keep them in line, but as always they can’t keep everything from the manga in the anime adaptation.
Third, well, this still goes back to the second point, but the story is something I don’t think I’ve seen before. Running into your doppleganger (or doppleliner I think they were called) causes one of you to die. What a crazy premise, but I like where it’s going so far.
I don’t want to get too excited about this anime, lest I find myself disappointed later in the season, but I can’t really help it. I’m really excited about this anime, and I hope it can live up to my expectations. So far, it’s doing a great job. I just hope it can keep holding itself to this high standard. Suffice it to say, I’m sticking with this one.
