Winter OPs~

Well, I’m bored as hell, so what better thing to do than go over some of the opening sequences from the shows I’ve seen so far from the Winter line up. Unfortunately, some of the shows tend to forgo using the OP in the first episode, due to wanting to pack the episode with as much stuff as they can to hook you on the series. Personally, I like being able to see the opening sequence. I love music, even though I’m not exactly invested in it. I guess what I mean is, I don’t really know much about music and genres and such, but I know what I like. And I’m almost always listening to music. Anyway, there’s still quite a few series that did include the OP, so here goes~

Easily my favorite opening so far this season: Viper’s Creed

It fits very nicely with the overall feel of the series, it has some action and shows lots of the characters. It has a bit of a kick, but it’s not quite metal or screamtastic. It was good enough for me to have it stuck in my head for a while, finally had to go and grab it. Very well put together. Just another plus for this series.

Worth a look: Kurokami

Another one with a nice bit of action, showing some of the characters as well as the city. Most of the opening sequence is at night, which is rather fitting for the name of the series and the dark themes with which it toys.

Not bad: Asu no Yoichi

The song isn’t exactly outstanding, but at least there’s a decent bit of animation, showcasing most of the characters. It gives you a feel for the series and shows the characters. But really, the song is rather forgettable.

Meh: White Album

Well, after listening to the song again, I do like it. But there’s a huge problem: there’s almost no animation, it’s all just backdrops with credits. I really can’t stress enough how important having some sort of animation is. If there’s nothing to watch while I listen to the opening song, I may as well just skip it. If I like the song, I’ll listen to it later, but the whole point of an opening sequence is to have a song and visuals.

Decent: Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th

Well, I can’t say I really liked the song all that much, but it certainly was fitting for what I’ve seen of the series (which isn’t much). And they also managed to have a bit of a story just using the opening sequence. Three of the girls, whose names I already forget, running around the school grounds, eventually being chased by pretty much everyone else. It was cute, and it meshes well with everything.

Another meh: Akikan

I’ll give it credit for having an opening sequence as bizarre as the show itself, but the song isn’t really to my tastes. I’m usually a fan of really upbeat J-pop-ish music, but it really wasn’t hitting the right chords with me.

Well, I think that’s all the ones that I’ve seen. Maria Holic and Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo didn’t have opening sequences for their first episodes. Which is probably a good thing for Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo, because I think I remember reading that the opening is by Ali Project.

the OP of natsume yuujinchou is awesome! so far, it’s the only decent, addictive one i’ve heard all season.

OP of Zoku Natsume Gayjinchou is pretty good I agree, and so is Asu no Yoichi’s. Well, this is only “so far”, still waiting for others such as Erin’s.

Sad to say all these OP made me facepalm. They aren’t really.. in sync with the characters if you ask me. The only one which was kind of in sync was Marimite :| And by “not in sync” I mean over 50% of it didn’t seem to go along with the animation. But that’s just my opinion :P

Haven’t seen that Zoku Natsume show, never saw the sequel and wasn’t interested enough from the summary.

You don’t like any of them Aizen? I thought Viper’s Creed was good. The other ones are only really passable.
