Munto – 01

Well, I’m surprised. I heard that this was KyoAni and therefore expected some great animation. What I got was animation on par with the first episode of Akikan.

Sailor Moon, is that you?!

So anyway, I suppose maybe my higher expectations of this series might’ve ruined it for me, but I’m going to have to wait at least for subs before I completely denounce it. What I can say is that the animation was way below what I was expecting. After hearing that Munto was going to be animated by KyoAni, I was expecting something along the lines of Clannad or Suzumiya Haruhi levels of animation. What I saw was pretty awful. It really did look like the animation that I saw some 10 years ago or however long it was that I watched Sailor Moon on American TV.

So the only hope left for this series seems to be the story. Well, that and the characters, but those two kind of go hand in hand. I really hope the story is decent, because I’ve been searching around for a good mahou anything show to watch. Feels like forever since I’ve seen a good one. But, I’m not exactly holding my breath.

Well, anyway, that’s all for now until I get to watch some subs. Oh, actually, amusingly enough, the OP/ED seem to have better animation than the anime itself. That makes me wonder if they didn’t just reuse all the footage from the OVAs and just make up a new OP/ED and just throw it all together. As for the OP itself, I’m sorta neutral so far. It’s not one that really hit the right chords off the bat, but I might like it better with time. The ED pretty much put me to sleep. What is it with EDs and being just plain boring. Oh well, anyway, enough ranting for now.

I heard that they would just be kind of airing the OAVs for the first two episodes, so that might explain the quality of animation. Well, I’ll have to wait and see for when I actually watch the episode.

I suppose you just download whatever pops up on your tokyotosho, watch it and blog it?

That’s the original OVA from last century

    LOL

I can’t wait for the real KyoAni work to how up. I hope the some scenes would be as awesome as the Ryoko x Yuki fight scene back in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya since KyoAni is doing a Mahou-genre show :)

That’s disappointing :| The first episodes are so important, why would they reuse old (bad) animation for the first few episodes. Ugh.

  5. Wow, you are one ungrateful bitch Nazarielle. :)

Go rewatch Sailor Moon… as someone who watched the first episode one week ago, I can tell you that this is leaps and bounds better than it. Furthermore… were the OVAs poorly animated? I do not remember that. I seem to recall them being in a boat with Fumoffu and AIR.

Anyway, how long was this file? It seems weird to me if they were actually airing the OVAs as individual episodes, because… they’re what, an hour each?

  6. Oh, and the OVAs were from 5 and 3 years ago, not 10. I wonder what the power of suggestion can do to animation quality…

Haha, you know I am :D

I never watched the OVAs, so I have no clue. It was 24:59. Did I watch the wrong episode or something? I usually trust Zero Raws to be rather reliable.

You are actually correct, it’s the new Munto. But your definition of animation quality is strange to say the least. The animation quality is immense for the background, but the actual colour palettes used are very 90-ish, probably done on purpose to reflect the dated nature of the show.

Kids these days lol, think colourful things are good animation.

Well, take a look at Clannad. Compare that to Munto. Perhaps I’m mistaking style for quality, but everything seems so much sharper to me in something like Clannad than in Munto. If it’s due to the fact that this really is reused footage from ‘03, then fine. But that’s still lazy.

I’ve been reading elsewhere that it’s pretty much the OVA footage. And considering the length of the OVAs, it might not get into new stuff for up to five or six episodes.

Definitely not as bad as Akikan. :P I thought it was fine…but it seems there’re already quite a few people who’re like augh.

And yeah, the version I watched was 25 minutes long as well. Not sure if the content is the same as the OVA…maybe if someone who watched the OVA has a look at my screenshots or something? XD

I did expect something better, or maybe ‘more like Clannad’ is the right word to use, but overall I liked the story for this ep and will be looking to see where they go with it.

  12. According to Sankaku Complex, they’re airing the content from the OVAs, split into episodes and remastered. (Biggest difference is the aspect ratio.)

IMHO the story of Munto is far more riveting than that of Clannad, and what’s-her-name Yumemi(?) is waaaay cooler than anyone in Clannad. XD

I still haven’t seen it subbed cuz I’m a lazy bastard and I’ve been marathoning Fate/Stay Night

    That’s not KyoAni. Just saying.

Actually, they DID reuse the OVA footages for 90% of episode 1. They made some colour adjustments and added a few new dialogues scenes though, but what you saw was basically Munto I (OVA). Hence, the difference of quality compared to the OP/ED is understandable. I trust we’ll see an improvement in terms of that once the show has finished covering both OVAs and start introducing new materials, which will probably be after ep4 or so… I thought storywise, the TV version did well… the narrative is clearer compared to the OVAs. They swapped some scenes around but and re-wrote some dialogues and the result was positive, imo.
