Instead of making proper posts for each series that I’ve watched so far, I decided to just bundle them all up in one post. Partly because I’m lazy and partly because most of them are really not all that interesting to me. So here goes!
First up is Full Metal Alchemist. I watched the first series like… 5 years ago or something and I liked it, even though the ending was a bit awkward. I’m interested to see what they change and how the new voice actors do. If I ever get enough motivation, I intend to watch an episode or two from the first series so I can remind myself what some of the characters sounded like, especially Lust. To steal a line from Zyl, Inoue Kikuko is making me lust after Lust. Although I do remember the original Lust being rather pleasing to the ears as well, so I want to see what I think of the difference. Doubt I’ll say more on FMA though, unless something huge happens. Or at least, not until near the end of the series, as that’s where presumably the most changes will be taking place.
I finally got around to finishing up Hayate no Gotoku’s first season, which I should really make a proper post about, if for no other reason than to spam more pictures of Maria. First, the good things about the second season: Hinagiku ED is awesome. Too awesome. I demand a Maria ED, J.C. Staff. Please? The bad: the difference in studios is noticeable. The differences seem small at first, but there are just certain things that make the transition more jarring than I thought it’d be. The biggest thing I think that’s different is the eyes. Maybe it’s because I felt like Maria changed the most that I feel it’s pretty significant, but it tends to rub me the wrong way. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to get used to it.
And the show everyone’s been talking about: K-On. I think this is one of the times when the collective community hyping something up actually has me going against the hype rather than getting swept up in it. Do I enjoy watching K-On? Yes. Do I think it’s the best show of Spring and/or the year? No. Let’s face it, the show is basically attempting to shove as much moe down your throat in the shortest amount of time as it can. This sort of thing can either work magnificently or backfire horrendously. So far, it seems to be working magnificently. Of the people from whom I’ve read poor reviews, almost none of them are in the target audience of the show, that being young males. Anyway, while the show is incredibly overhyped at the moment, it’s still rather fun to watch. If the show sticks at least somewhat to the 4koma, then I have no doubt I’ll be enjoying the things to come. I just hope the voice actresses are up to the task. I don’t think I’ll be posting about it, though. Also, needs more imouto :3
INB4 SISCON! Well, this was certainly a very different approach to a first episode and I’m not sure I really liked it. Tears to Tiara’s main pull for me was that it was packed full of voice actresses that I love. Unfortunately, none of them showed up in the first episode. Instead of introducing a bunch of characters, we’re treated to a demon king awakening ritual where Riannon is set to be sacrificed to bring this demon king, Arawn, back to full power or something. It was certainly a bit different from what I’m used to, and I’m all for new things, but I just don’t like Goto Yuko. The only role of hers I’ve been able to tolerate was Anya Alstreim. Anyway, my dislike for her and her character aside, I’m going to give this one a few more episodes before I decide if it’s really worth following. If Nakahara Mai’s character is introduced in the next episode and she plays at least a somewhat prominent role, I’ll probably stick around at least for a while.
Well, Senjou no Valkyria was definitely a disappointment. Alicia is pretty cool, but everything else about the show felt really lame. No one has any combat sense whatsoever, jokes are made literally as they’re being fired upon, it seems rather confused. Am I not supposed to take this show (or the combat) seriously? If that’s the case, it’s doing a bad job of getting that point across. I’m going to give it a few more episodes in the hopes that things will improve and the characters will get a bit smarter, but I’m not holding my breath. If Alicia is the only thing keeping me watching the series, I’m going to get tired of it really quickly.
I didn’t mention Saki, because I already did a fairly length post about the first episode and I’m already rather dead set on following it. I also have a few more series I want to take a look at. Pandora Hearts, Asura Cryin’, and Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica S are all on my list, and I think I have at least Asura Cryin’ downloaded, but haven’t really gotten around to it. Overall, Saki is the only anime this season that I’m really all that enthusiastic about, the rest are just alright or ‘meh.’

K-On! is a good show (that is also, if you are bored and want to watch something that’s slice of life) but what irritates me is that there’s too much MOE. It’s getting out of hand already.. and the main character? She’s impossible. She can’t be that stupid. That’s the number one thing that turns me off in the slice of life category but I guess so far, K-On! is still watchable.
Haven’t watched the other shows yet because I’ve been busy this summer(yeah, it’s summer here in my place) and we’ve been going out too much. I plan to watch those either today or tomorrow but after reading different reviews on those and I guess I should lower my expectations.
“Overall, Saki is the only anime this season that I’m really all that enthusiastic about, the rest are just alright or ‘meh.’”
I so agree with you there, as far as I’ve seen, Saki is the only thing that makes me wanna go ‘Why can’t it be the next episode already?!’. Even though I didn’t expect it to be like that, this one’s probably on top of the list now.
Haven’t watched Eden of the East yet though; but still.nazarielle said
@kirapika: Yeah, I really think they test the limits of stupidity with Yui. I hate characters like her, because people like that either don’t exist or are so stupid that they’re obnoxious rather than charming. Still, every now and then she does get a chuckle or a smirk out of me, so apparently the moe is still working, even though I realize how blatant it is.
I feel the same way about Saki. I can’t wait for Sunday, it’s all I can do to keep myself in check to watch other random anime to try to take my mind off of Saki. That or play mahjong to get my fix.

Tears to Tiara:
Not all the voice actresses are going to show up in the first episode, take into consideration plot development and pacing. It’s based on an RPG anyway, and this was show the game started (generally).

@omisyth: Yeah, I know. I liked the different approach to a first episode, I just don’t like Goto Yuko. If it had started off with all the same stuff except for a different character, I’d probably be singing a different tune. That’s just me being fickle :p
@anon: Yeah, I’ve been told to watch it by a couple people for its hilarity, but I’ve been kinda lazy about getting around to it.
